Advanced Placement (AP) is a program in the United States and Canada created by the College Board which offers college-level curricula and examinations to high school students. American colleges and universities may grant placement and course credit to students who obtain high scores on the examinations. These tests are held only once a year, in the month of May. If one is not able to take the test for some reason, then one can opt for late testing for a late fee. (also held in May )
These tests constitutes of multiple choice and free response type of questions. The multiple choice component of the exam is scored by computer, while the free response and essay portions are scored by trained Readers at the AP Reading each June. The overall goal is for the grades to reflect an absolute scale of performance which can be compared from year to year.
A good score will help a student get credits and also helps in landing in a good college and getting a scholarship. Any score below 3 is generally not taken into consideration to grant credits.
There are a plethora of AP tests one can take. There are 2 tests in Calculus, 2 in Computers, 4 in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Micro and Macro economics, Politics, History, Art, Languages, etc.
